Honestly, I Don’t Know
A sincere portrait of who I am and how I got here.
Vou ser honesta.
Não sei porque comecei a fotografar.
Não foi amor à primeira vista.
Não foi herança, nem destino, nem um sonho antigo.
Foi uma necessidade, uma ferramenta que estava à mão.
Não sei porque tive três filhos.
Não sei porque deixei a arquitetura.
Não sei porque me tornei fotógrafa.
Não sei se foi uma escolha ou um acaso.
Se foi desistência ou libertação.
Se abandonei por estar farta, por ser fraca
ou porque precisava de espaço para algo novo.
Não sei porque amo fotografar.
Não foi fácil, nem natural.
Não apareceu como uma forma pronta.
Foi aprendida, treinada, construída.
E continua a desafiar-me todos os dias.
O que sei é que sempre vi coisas,
mesmo sem ver bem desde os cinco anos.
E, talvez, seja isso:
a fotografia é o que me permite transformar o que vejo
em algo que posso partilhar com o mundo,
quem sabe tocar vidas, preservar memórias,
e contar histórias para aqueles que não sabem como contá-las.
Não sei todas as respostas.
Mas sei que estou aqui.
E que, de alguma forma, a fotografia é o meu meio
de contar histórias que não sei escrever, nem desenhar.
E por isso escolhi fotografar.
I’ll be honest.
I don’t know why I started photographing.
It wasn’t love at first sight.
It wasn’t inheritance, nor destiny, nor an old dream.
It was a necessity, a tool that was at hand.
I don’t know why I had three children.
I don’t know why I left architecture.
I don’t know why I became a photographer.
I don’t know if it was a choice or a coincidence.
If it was giving up or breaking free.
If I walked away because I was tired, because I was weak,
or because I needed space for something new.
I don’t know why I love photographing.
It wasn’t easy, nor natural.
It didn’t appear as a ready-made form.
It was learned, trained, built.
And it continues to challenge me every day.
What I do know is that I’ve always seen things,
even without seeing well since I was five years old.
And maybe that’s it:
photography is what allows me to transform what I see
into something I can share with the world,
perhaps touch lives, preserve memories,
and tell stories for those who don’t know how to tell them.
I don’t have all the answers.
But I know I’m here.
And somehow, photography is my way of telling stories
that I can’t put into words or draw.
That’s why I chose to photograph.
